October Narc Meeting

We have BBQ coming at 3pm courtesy of wareagle35031 and I spent too much at the grocery store today, so I think we are okay for food and such with what we have now.

For the fish food, we are in pretty good shape. We could use some more marine protein mini-foods like frozen rotifers, copepods and oyster eggs or some Formula 2 to round out the recipe.

Other than the folks who have already volunteering to bring stuff, can I get a rough head count of anyone else planning on coming?

i just found out we have homecoming at grandparent's church next sunday in birmingham, and i wouldn't have time to bring my foster babies back home to a babysitter than make it by 3. The kiddos are supposed to be going home next month so maybe i will be able to make it to the next one. I was really looking forward to this one and hate that i will miss it. I hope you all have a good turnout and a good time.

Nicole,

Do we need to bring some containers/ziplock bags to bring our fish food home?
Also do you need me to bring my food processor?

Monica

Are you going to chop the food up really fine or puree them?
I have a large frozen squid. I can defrost it and bring a section of it, if you'd like.

We can all discuss what we want to get out of the food and choose accordingly. I personally chop the ingredients separately (or at least in like batches) and then mix together, which gives the best control over ingredient size and allows for variations in size as well. I tend to keep things pretty fine, but I have no large fish.

Pureeing everything together ala blender style with water makes for good coral food, but not so good for fish because so much ends up too small for the fish.

We can always do fish food and then totally smear part of the batch for coral food if desired. :)

That's what I do, too, and I believe that the guy who started Rod's food did exactly that when he started out.

However, it makes a lot of work unless we have a few knives and chopping blocks so that a few of us can work simultaneously. Luckily we mostly have items that are small to start with. I actually grate frozen table shrimp with a cheese grater like Martin Moe suggested. He recommends freezing a number of table shrimp into a big ball to make grating easier.

If any of you want to use a food processor at home to do this, it works better to have bulk ingredients frozen in small chunks. Then you can mix the finely chopped frozen food into partially defrosted mysis, cyclopeeze, rotifers, or what have you.

I am actually itching to try out a Ziploc vacuum pump and bags. Have anyone tried them yet?

I don't know about for sale, but I have a favite, brain coral (whatever you want to call it) frag that is about 1 1/2" that I have had for about a month that i have decided i just don't like. I don't have a digital camera, but this link is to a picture on liveaquaria that looks like it.

I also have a candy cane frag that I love but it doesn't seem to like me. It has 4 heads and 2 seem to be fading away. I think it is probably my lighting but i don't know.

Any way, if someone is interested in either of these i will trade or sale both.:)

wareagle, I'll trade the candy cane for the daisy polyp if you like. The candy cane is glued to a little rock about the size of a small hand if that is OK?:)

Here's a message from beaslbob:

Please pass on that I will not be able to make this month's meeting as I have to be traveling to Ozark Alabama.

Mariner please email me at beaslbob@aol.com

I will really miss the meeting and even the people at the meeting. I trust the meeting will be just fine without me. And probably better. :)

October Meeting

October Meeting

Hello Everyone,

An employee at Petco in Decatur turned us on to the reef club site and we've been surfing and reading threads for a little while now. My fiance and I would like to attend the October meeting; if someone could please email me at tammmmyr@hotmail.com with contact info, I'd like to see what time it is tomorrow and what we could bring.

We've also got a beautiful tube anemone we'd like to find a good home for, if anyone's interested. Absolutely gorgeous, white and lavender, but he's a killer and I worry for my little clowns. He's already taken down 2 fish and a rather nice carpet, so beware!

Thanks, Jason and Tammy
