octopus extreme 160

I have a octopus extreme 160 running on my 40g and im curious should the outlet pipe be submerged or should i take the pipe off so water is falling into the sump?

Shouldn't matter. It is vented and has a tallish stand pipe. I would leave the plumbing intact.
