Octopus Hob Skimmer Cup Problem

My skimmer cup on the intake side sucks in food, fish,
snails. Need a DIY to cap off and protect the intake so all doesnt get sucked in. Please help

Do you have the top of the overflow box above the water level. If not that should be the case. Also you will not be able to avoid Taking in some small food bits unless you turn your skimmer off when feeding which I do sometimes.

if the cup is breaking the surface it gets real loud and doesnt bubble as much

Something dose not sound right. when you raise up the overflow cup is the up take tube reaching the bottom of the cup. If so the tube is too long for your tank water level and you will need to cut off a half inch or so untill you can raise it above the water level.

Maybe I need some netting or something to protect the fish from being drawn in ???
