Octopus Skimmer decision trouble

I am starting a 50 gallon tank. ATM it is to be a sumpless system so for a skimmer I need a HOB and the best I had seen this morning (based on reviews) had been the AquaC Remora HOB, but while reading some more reviews I noted that several reviews commented on it pouring micro-bubbles into the tank.

This started me looking at others and I found the HOB Reef Octopus HOB skimmers, but I can't find much info about them. Does anyone know if these have problems with micro-bubbles? any other problems? Does it perform any better than the Remora?

I am also looking for a good hang on skimmer. I have had two remoras and was reaaly disappointed in their performance and I believe there are better skimmers now available.Good Luck!

I have not had a Remora, but I have an Octopus HOB and I am very happy with the performance so far. The only design flaw I noticed was a sponge at the very bottom of the last chamber. It is very easy for the sponge to get clogged with detritus and cause the skimmer to overflow. Due to the location it is almost impossible to change out and clean, so I just removed mine and now it works great.

The Remora Pro with Mag 5 would skim the heck out of your 50. Don't believe the hype about Octo HOB. I did some shopping and ask a guy who owns one of the large online reef stores. He sells a lot of Remoras and Reef Octopus....he recommended the Remora Pro over any of the HOB Octopus. I would think with his experience he would have good ideas about the performance of both. Have heard awesome things about the Deltec HOB's.

Warner Marine H2/H2X would be another one to look at. I've heard extremely good things about the Octopus 800s once it's been settled down and a couple pins from the pinwheel have been removed to tune the output to a more acceptable level to stop the microbubble problems they have. Another one that's supposed to be good is the Bermuda Rogue http://www.bermudaaquatics.com/rogue.htm

I have an octopus HOB & I love it. It skims like a champ & I personally have not had any micro bubble problems.

Bh100f here, I get some microbubbles at 1st, and when ever I clean it but they calm down pretty quick.
Mine is 'stock' but there is a long thread on modding them.
