Octopus Skimmer Mods

OK I thought I would check back in but I can't reply to my earlier picture with the airline in the cup trick - after seven days now not only have I not had to pour water down the airline once to unstick it, but my bubbles are finer and the skimmate darker. There must be something to that humid air thing.

I am getting much less skimmate than before, but I do not have to fuss with it anywhere near as much as well.

It was a long time ago. it pulled a little more air but pulled alot more water. i did not want that on a in sump skimmer or any skimmer for that matter. i discovered the gg the same day and it worked even better more air less water. A few weeks later i tryed the mesh and it was the easyest to do with great results.
 
KH971, you'll probably pull more air with 1 pump than you did with the 2 stock OTP 3000 that your DNW250 came with. the stock venturi may slow down some of your air.
 
Does this inhibit the skimmers ability to oxygenate the water or is that a mute point? was just wondering cause its putting the same air back threw again and again....

I thought the samething.
As long as you had other holes in the lid id think the impact would be minimal. But it probable would have less oxgenation ability. Good tank flow and water quality/Redox i would not worry about it.

I wonder if that's a difference between the OTP2000 and OTP3000 pumps? I have the OTP2000 pumps on my 3 pump recirculating skimmer and it has 2 rows of needles on the impellers..

My OTP-3000 has 2.
 
i just drilled the 2 holes bigger. it really tricky to drill the clear tubing without melting it, or spinning it out.

The way impur did it works great, but on external skimmers ...
ill try something different this week ill post a photo ether way

The bubble size is much finer ... in 3 days ORP has risen from 350 mV to 395mV ... and skimate foam is darker and much denser. I haven't really notice anymore or less bubble density or water flow. My conclusion is that this is a worthwhile and easy modification to undertake.

The 3-layer NW impeller is the standard impeller that we get here in Oz with the OTP-3000 pumps on the RO recirc skimmers ... could be that the 2-layer impellers are fitted to the NW versions to overcome pumping water against the head.

If you look back thru this thread and the other octopus thread there is a couple of people who have done this. They both drilled the hole in the bottom of the cup.

I broke the clear plastic nipple where the airhose attaches to the venturi. RIght now I have rigid airhose crazyglued to what was left of it but it is not performing as well as before.

Any suggestions for fixing this - and or improvements while I need to replace anyway?

Mine did the same thing. I glued it back in place and got 18 scfm. Yesterday I drilled the hole to the size of RO line. I drilled this thru the top. Then I took a drill bit that was just larger than the hole that faces the pump (the 90 degree hole). I then notched the ro line so that air can flow in both directions.

I have already mesh moded my impeller with 3 layers of mesh by breaking off the top layer of pins. Now I am not sure how much air I am pulling since the meter only goes to 20 and the pin is stuck to the top. I am looking into another meter but I would say I am pulling over 25 now. This worked very well and I would encourage everyone with a mesh mod to do this. it makes such a large difference.

I believe this made as big of a difference as the mesh mod its self.
 
Has it been determened where the best place to order the Octopus? between price and service? Or is it still 6 of one and half a dozen another?
Also I currently half a 55gal. with 5 gal sump, but soon (already have the tank) I am moving up to a 150gal, would I be better off getting the 200 recirc rather then the 150 recirc?????
 
I also broke my venturi airline. I put a rigid hose (1/4 water maker line) into the pump. It was getting so much air that I restricted the other end with a valve. Wow it’s moving more air than ever and we will se but I don’t thing it will clog nearly as often with the larger diameter. I ran the tube through the holder on the side of the skimmer body and then into the pump intake. Seems to stay put and along with the mesh mod it’s skimming like mad.
