Octopus tank

Someone give me the low down. Want to do a Octo only tank. I have a mixed reef now. Tell me cycling info. Does it need to cycle or just get salinity correct and go for it. I know I need a tight lid. What else? Thanks for the help

You'll need to cycle the tank if it's new. What size tank were you planning? Most species require 55-65g tank. They don't live that long either and there's no telling how old the one you get is unless if someone else raised it from birth.

I heard that was the downside. Lifespan. Prob 30 gal for my pediatric office. Tell me the point of cycling a new tank since it will have no rock or live sand? Shouldn't it be ready to roll once you get salinity right? It took 3 months to cycle my current tank which has 200 pounds of live rock in it.

You need the nitrifying bacteria that is needed to break down ammonia to nitrite, then to nitrate. If you didn't have it, then the ammonia would kill the octopus. That's the point of having live rock and live sand. If you don't have anything in the tank the octopus will most likely get very stressed out and die imo.

Fixed this for you.

i know someone that keeps an octopus in a critter carrier inside his tank, and even inside that it still gets out. imo unless you have a lid that fits perfectly on top and goes around the filtration and what not the octopus will escape
