I'm pretty happy with my collection of fish. I have some rare ones, and some perrenial favorites. I'm even blessed to have an Emperor Angel that actually leaves my corals alone. But I have to throw some praise and affection out for my Convict Tang. I'm really surprised more folks don't keep this particular Acanthurus.
They are, in my experience, the least territorial of all Acanthurus. In fact, they often get bullied by other tankmates. Mine is definitely at the bottom of the pecking order. I have had success with other Acanthurus in the past, including Acanthurus achilles and lineatus. But I really believe now, that the convict is the most ideal Acanthurus of the group. It is not the most attractive. But it appears to be more hardy than other Acanthurus, it's certainly not very territorial, and it is an algae eating machine.
The only downsides, like all Acanthurus, is that they need large aquariums(125g minimum imo), lots of current and O2, and have to feed frequently. They have an extremely high metabolism.
Anyone else keep these? Their natural range is astounding!
