Odyssea Metal Halide + T5 Fixture changes

I bought a Odyssea 36" 406 watt fixture for $199.00. Bought a Lumetek Ballast dimmable ballast for $139, Pheonix bulb for $45. Total cost $383.00. Now that is a damn good price for a good metal halide setup. Food for thought for anyone looking at getting a good fixture without dropping $500 + on one.

I am waiting for the 716w to be shipped on Monday. I did a ton of research on this fixture and there have been some heat issues in the past. However, they have been recognized and remedied. They added more fan strength and increased the capacity of the ballasts. The new ones are apparently great fixtures for the price. The only drawback I found so far is the quality of the MH & T5 bulbs. Even if they are replaced the price is still awesome.

The new fixtures are pretty well built and the fans seem to do a good job. The 15k bulb that came with it was pretty crappy imo. Once I set the 14k Pheonix in, there was no doubt on how much better the pheonix was. I also reaplced the 4 t-5s actinics that came with it for (1) Fiji Purple (1) ATI aquablue special(2) ATI Blue +. I am please with the color of this setup.

+1 to the MH bulb to the 14k Phoenix. I changed my T5s to UVL's with internal reflectors to mitigate the subpar reflectors in the fixture. Overall, happy with the fixture, especially for the money!

I have 4 new Geismann T5's 2-actinic 2-purple bulbs. I will now go with (2) 14K Phoenix MH bulbs. Where did you guys get yours?

Go a head and bank the money for LED's.
Good fixture. But in the long run you could have bought the new Ecotech Radion.

They have a 15 year bulb life.

You will spend several hundred a year replacing the energy sucking MH.

..and within 15 years, there will probably be new lighting technology that surpasses that old LED fixture. People will spend money regardless on lighting systems as long as they have the reputation of being the best out there.

Food for thought :P

On Topic: A friend of mine if using an Odyssea MH fixture and everything in his tank is doing great. Even I'm thinking of picking one up.

A lot of peoPle don't even have the tank set up for that long for one reason or another. I just laugh when I see something like "15 year bulb life for LEDs saves you tons" when you are paying a small fortune up front to have your tank broken down in a couple of years. How many people do you know that had there tank for 15yrs? It's a ridiculous selling point for LEDs.

After it is all said and done, you still have the crappy Odyssea fixture with those horrible reflectors. Be sure and go over the wiring inside very closely. The last one of their products I bought was a fire hazard because of the crappy wiring connections that were loose. I would not call it a "good" MH setup, but it will work.
