I know this is a sad story and sympathies goes out to the families involved....but mannn these kids are driving some pretty hot cars at the age they are at....when I was 16 I got a 1989 Honda Accord (hand me down)......at 17 I got a 1997 Honda Prelude (grad gift)...I drove that car until 2005 when I was able to purchase a 2005 Tundra on my engineers salary!

The car total looks like a BMW M3!

consider yourself lucky. i had to buy my first car and that did not happen till my junior yr in college. ;)

My first car at 17 was a 1976 Chevy Malibu station wagon. So I got you beat there  My next car at 19 was a 1966 Ford Mustang. Talk about moving backwards in time. LOL.

Yeah, I know what you mean by spoiled rich kids and their cars. My wife used to teach high school in Walnut, a pretty affluent area. Some kid got a Porsche Boxster for his 16th birthday. And you often see Mercedes, BMWs, and other nice cars in the student parking lot.

Your wife used to teach at WHS Kenny? What subject and Miss what?

I went there all 4 yrs of HS. Graduated 99. I remember the kid that drove the Boxter, unless there was more than one. But Diamond Bar High has even more spoiled students at only a few miles away.

LOL.....my wife is Ms. Chen and she taught 9th and 12th grade regular and honors English until about 2001 or 2002? She now teaches at Suzanne Middle School across the street.

I don't know if there was more than one kid with the Boxster. I only heard about it from my wife. I think the kids parents owned some kind of computer related company.

Yep saw it late last night. But its not really "rich" kids. Kids will race anything. Its parents teaching them responsibility. Plus you know kids think it'll never happen to them because they know it all.

One thing thats hard to understand is. How come the driver of the other car was arrested for vehicular manslaughter. Only if he hit the other car right? Correct me but, if your racing another car, he loses control crashes and dies. Was it really your fault? Did you cause him to crash and die. He was on his on will racing you as well right? It's just unfortunate that he died. Maybe someone has to take the blame or be held accountable. I'm not being unsympathic but it sucks. Kinda like when that one guy tried to sue a fast food chain, McDonald's it think, because he got fat from eating there too much. Was that McDonalds fault for continuing to sell to him? Funny how the world turns.

77 Accord and it wasn’t even a hand me down. I was sharing it with my mom until my 2nd year in college… dang rich kids……

thats exactly why you dont buy your teenager an expensiive car.

Don't buy them any car, buy them a bus pass. Or a bicycle.

I had a skateboard till I was 18.

Maybe send them to race school if they're really interested in racing. BTW, my first car was a '77 datsun B210 station wagon.

93 Explorer. Not even mine. I share it with my Mom, just to go to school, and work. Still a couple grand short for my own:lol:

Up at the college I go to in Valencia there are a bunch of kids (freshman) driving brand new beamers, s2000, very expensive cars for racing purposes. I ask them all because I have most of them in some classes and their parents bought them?!!! 50,0000 car for racing!! Thats bull ****!

My first reaction is at least he did not kill himeself.

My children will have computers in their cars that record everything. they will not race, period.

They will also get the Stock Toyota, Ford, chevy or Nissan pickup truck, wsmall engin, 2wd, no lifts, rims or flash. Not until they move out will they have a decision on what they drive, period.

I think we are carazy to allow 16 year olds to drive. We Give them sports cars, cell phones, ipods and fast food and set them lose with their friends in tow. it is a recipie for a problem that will hurt or kill someone.

Kids now a day are either lucky or spoil. I would be happy just to have a bicycle when I was in college. Didn't have my first car until I graduated and it was an old chevrolet truck.

I had a 1987 Geo metro for 16-18 until I had to buy my own. then I bought a used 1992 toyota corolla with a blown engine that I replaced.

My Child with have a nice Civic. The day he races it, is the day he loses it.

To me its all about parenting. So what if I had a brand new truck when I turned 15 and dumped probably 5 to 10K into it before I was legal to drive. It doesn't make me spoiled, or irresponsible, or be insensitive to others around me because my parents (who at one point were on welfare) wanted me to have the life they never had. I can only hope that I will be able to provide for my children the way my parents provided for me. These things are caused by lack of parenting.

Sorry for the rant.

One more thing... so does this mean that because the other driver died that he doesn't assume any responsibility. Obviously because hes dead, but it takes two to tango and there is no way that the other kid MADE him push the peddle to the floor. I'm sure they will argue that in the courts.

Ah sweet, my first car when I turned 18 (32 now) was a '69 Datsun 510 that I worked on for a few yrs and made it into a BRE replica. I loved that thing.

didnt the Terminator just pass a bill that makes it a felony to street race in california? I think it was like a day or 2 before this happened... sucks for everyone involved.
