Ah sweet, my first car when I turned 18 (32 now) was a '69 Datsun 510 that I worked on for a few yrs and made it into a BRE replica. I loved that thing.

No kidding, we're about the same age (I'm 31). I would have loved a 510 or a mango. Wanted CRX or Mustang but ended up with a integra in college. Can't complain but spent way too much money on it.

rockin, the 510 was my dream car back in high school... old for my age but LOTS of potential (for the track of course ;) ).

my first car was an 86 volvo gl sedan. we called it the "tank". though it was pretty luxurious... it had power doors/windows and a sun roof!

LOL.....my wife is Ms. Chen and she taught 9th and 12th grade regular and honors English until about 2001 or 2002? She now teaches at Suzanne Middle School across the street.

I don't know if there was more than one kid with the Boxster. I only heard about it from my wife. I think the kids parents owned some kind of computer related company.

I had her my senior year. That's cool! Small world. I was on a jury that went to trial with my 8th grade English teacher!

93 Explorer. Not even mine. I share it with my Mom, just to go to school, and work. Still a couple grand short for my own:lol:

Up at the college I go to in Valencia there are a bunch of kids (freshman) driving brand new beamers, s2000, very expensive cars for racing purposes. I ask them all because I have most of them in some classes and their parents bought them?!!! 50,0000 car for racing!! Thats bull ****!

Art School?

The bmw 3 series is a safe car. If I had children and it was affordable I would consider it a good first car...Not the top of the line sport model though. Maybe a 323i-325i or a C230 instead of a AMG CLK.

for the price, the new civic is probably the best bet.
i saw the new civic and a chevy suv in an accident, guess who was totalled, yep, the suv go figure.
probably the biggest safety feature on the new civic is the standar curtain airbag. curtain airbag in a <20,000 car, go Honda!

for my first vehicle, i turned 18 and got a motorcycle ('01 gsxr 750) and in about 6 months of riding, 1 week of trauma hospital stay, i found out personally why it was too dangerous to have. so then at 19, i saved up some money and got my s2000. all by my self, no parents, nothing. i work and pay payments, and i dam well know i aint gettin' my car taken away by popoz for racing and end up paying for no car :)

resposibility is the key

You guys are all lucky.. I didn't get MY own car until I was 23. (i know I know) but damnit I worked for it. I had to ride my trusty bike to work everyday for 5 miles. My car was a 1986-ish Ford Taurus with 200K miles :( god that car sucked. It blew a radiator hose while on the 10 fwy and I was stuck in the middle of nowhere in Palm Springs with no cell phone and no money. It's a long story how I got home

Back to the topic.. I was just watching the news and saw this as well. Kinda sad... but I thought "ricers" are gone? The height of street racing scene was back in 2000 when everyone and their mom had a fart cannon on just about ANY car. You go out to rent DVD and next thing you know there's a Honda Civic with fart pipes revving next to your minivan... those days

A teenager can race any car. Even a 1990 Ford Escort could get to 90mph, it just takes a little longer.

But MY kid won't race. MY kid will be perfect! : )

I don't expect my child to be perfect. I do understand a child's nature. You cannot repress it. So your best bet it to respect it and help direct it's output in safe and acceptable directions. For example: at 16, my child if he choses will be allowed (even supported) to participate in track days and race events like his dad =).

Redirection is a much more powerful tool than repression. Not only that, but supporting your child strengthens your bond as opposed to eroding it. The stronger your bond and trust, the better off your child will be and the more influence you will have. Just my 2c.

I bet my kids will be more perfect than yours

Even I did some hotdog stuff in my good old Malibu station wagon back in the day. Then buying my own Yamaha FZR600 and getting hit head on by a car while going to school one day. Wait, what am I saying. God, I hope my kids don't turn out like me :eek2:

My first car was a 1982 Ford Escort that I was given in 1984 by my grandfather. Now mind you, grandpa was the "thrifty" one that bought everything at the lowest prices possible, so this car had NOTHING!! I had to spend $39 at Leo's Stereo just to get an AM/FM casette in the car. Vinyl seats, 1.6 or 1.8 liter motor making a whole 85 hp, 4 speed................it was the worst.

Meanwhile my parents had a 71 Chevelle (not an SS) w/ bucket seats, 350 ci motor, floor shifter, etc that they absolutely refused to let me drive. I got to look at the Chevelle every day as I pulled up in my Escort. Probably was a good thing cuz I would have wrapped it around a telephone pole.

Steve :D

I'd take a Volvo S-40 over a 3-series for a teenager (they almost look alike).

Anyway, it happened down the road from my office, and I think it's safe to say that the number of spoiled *** teenagers down here is silly. Then again, the number of spoiled *** adults down here is equally silly.
