Office Fluval Edge

Was given a Fluval Edge 6 gallon tank as the person did not like the small opening on the top, I mentioned that the glass top can come off and the tank would still be perfectly safe but he didn't want it. So first thing was the glass top came off and I ditched the filter and light

light: Kessil A80 tuna blue
circulation: Hydor Pico 180 x2
heater: 50 watt

Didn't weigh the rock or sand but I went off of looks.

Stocking will be pretty light, probably do some sexy shrimp maybe a pom pom crab. For fish I might do a firefish. Corals will be zoas, acans, and a few sps.

Will be creating a cover for the box that extends up from the base to dress up the cables a little.

I started one about six weeks ago. Got bryopsis after 5 weeks from a piece of live rock I used to seed the tank.

It looks really good with the top off. I kept mine on and have concerns when it comes time to use a razor blade.

Looks good. As for removing the top, it was pretty easy. I use DE safety razors so I used one if those (Feather blades). They are thinner than a razor blade and did a great job. Just used gloves and a set of small vise grips to hold the blade

Nice, I think I'll leave my top on cause I already made the lighting set up.

Are you planning on more equipment and what are you plans for nutrient export?

No filtration at this time. Just water changes to start then I'll go from there depending on how it's working out

I don't have any real filtration at the moment myself but I did use some batting over the intake to take out the fine stuff and keep the water clear.

What are your plans for cycling the tank

Also do you find you pumps noisy the clip on mine is weak I'm thinking I'll have to super glue it to stop the rattling

Hello it was a good idea to remove the top glass, hard to keep the glasses clean with it in place. Had such an aquarium a while ago, the filtration solved with an external filter with a little live rock in it.

Tanks is chugging along. First life is going in today, couple of snails and a pom pom crab.

Hi! I just picked up an Edge and was it difficult to get the top off?

Also, if I take the top off could I use the original equipment still?

Sorry for the delay. Removing the top was very easy, just take your time and go slow. As mentioned instead of a razor blade I used a DE Safety razor (Feather Blade), much thinner than a razor blade. Just used a pair of vise grips to hold the blade while moving it.

Without the top on you would not be able to use the black cover that hides the light as it sits on top of the tank, other than that you can use all original equipment

Thanks! My goal in taking off the top would be to be able to clean it and capture inhabitants if needed. I was planning on setting the top back in place.

Would the weight of the top once unattached put undue stress on the sides and possibly cause a problem? I came across several comments in the web that removing the top could cause breaks in the corner seals and leak.

No issues with the corner seals as the blades are sharp enough to cut and not pull on the silicon. So the silicone going up the sides is still intact. I have no fears that my tank would leak from removing the top as I did. As for removing it and putting it back I think that may be asking for trouble depending on where the tank is located. I'd be afraid of something causing it to shift, possibly fall. Plus if you use the original filter you would need to remove that in order to remove the glass top each time you want access to the tank.
