Office Nano

About 2 months ago when I started my new job I finally got my own office. I knew first off I wanted to put a small tank in there. I had some stuff lying around from my first SW tank that was a 10 gal nano FOWLR that was less that successful. I wanted a reef and with all the knowledge that I have learned over tha past 2 years on RC I felt I could make it work this time. Should have taken build pics but it literally came together in an afternoon! Now that it has been successful and stable for a while, I wanted to post some pics.
The Specs-5.5gal AGA, Red Sea nanofilter, Coralife 18w pc fixture, Tetra 5gal heater, Elite mini A-130 internal filter
The Pets-yellow tail damsel, firefish goby, 2 blue leg hermits, one reef hermit, 3 narsarius snails, 2 astria snails, and zoos and gsp.

I made the hood out of that cheap wood paneling from the back of cheap dorm furniture so its super light. glass top was cut by lowes, light from amazon via old giftcard, I wired a computer fan to a old cell phone charger to vent the heat from the light, the leds are the Current expandable system ones from the AC, the redsea filter has a mini tetra biobag for mechanical/chemical filtration and Seachm matrix rock, the internal filter provides flow over the LR and has a sponge for bio/mechanical filtration. I origionally intended it to be a FO tank which is why i choose the small light but the zoos and gsp are hardy enough to deal with the lower light and probally like a little bit of nutrients in the water. I top off daily with RODI from home and perform a 1gal WC every Friday morning. I am considering adding a small single bulb retrofit pc light from nanotuners (24 bucks) what do you think? Suggestions welcome. I want to put on a modded AC70 fuge but think that they are expensive new so may just wait to stumble on a used one someday.

Build cost was very low because I had a lot of the materals in my garage but they were bought at one time so here is a breakdown
tank $14
light $37
Hood $free scrap wood
Fan $11
Charger $free old junk
Heater $13
nanofilter $14
Internal filter $10
glass top $4.50
Glas top grip $1.75
LR and Sand and Matrix rock taken out of home tank

Nice, man! I love it! I'm thinking about putting one in our computer lab here at work. :) I'm thinking about doing a 10g, tho, because I want a tail-spot blenny. :D

I love those green and blue zoas.

Thanx brandon, It really makes my office feel like home! I would say that you should try the ac70 or ac100 mod for a 10 gallon and it shoud cut down on your WC's in the computer lab which i am sure will be daunting.....zzzzzzth...pop....fizzzzzle, ya know hehehe
I got about 25 heads on that colony right now, when it gets a few more or whenever I see a polyp that seems easy to access ill cut you one. I transplanted those watermelons (actually i think they are a eagle eye morph, still my favs) that I got from you in here too and they are taking off. The necks on the zoos are streaching a bit so I think they want more light, is that a reasonable assumption? Anyone have any better ideas for a reflector in my hood than the foil I have in there? I am thinking about adding a 13w retro pc to help but am not sure if that will be enough help. Someone needs to make a mini t5ho lamp, that would be awesome!

Very cool man. Much appreciated. :)

As far as the zoas, I would assume the same.

Oh, and I've personally always considered Eagle Eyes/Watermelons to be the same, but I may be wrong. :)

have you looked into the 18" noav extreme t5 ho.. i have it on my 5.5 and its worth every penny, i picked mine up from a lfs for $64

So the necks of the zoas were reaching for the sky and i hate that look so I decided to put more light in the tank. I think the 18w coralife fixture was only intended for a 2.5 gal nano. I went to the AC after work and to my dismay they had no 18 inch t5ho fixtures anymore, but they did say they could order them. I decided that I already had the pc fixture and didnt want to take a loss so I thought retrofit. Then he suggested a self ballasted pc. I instantly thought "awesome DIY project" anyway here it is I built a box made from wood and plexi, wrapped it in metal ac duct tape (not the grey stuff, the metal stuff) and drilled a hole. instant 20w of 50/50 light for 17.50. Thats only .87 cents/watt hehehehe

does anyone think i could keep lps in here now? One of my frogspawn had a new little head that I would love to put in here! It is not 38w pc over a 5.5 so 6.9w/gal. Dare I say could I put a easy sps in here!

The frogspawn I got from Brandon seems to be doing great in my nano. I have 96W of 50/50 PC on a 10 gallon tank. It's probably about halfway between the top and bottom of the tank.

yes it will hang over the edges a little bit but if you hang it it looks rele nice.. good job on the diy light looks great but imo im not a big fan of how bulky it looks.. lps should do good in your tank now with the new lighting.. keep up the good work

yeah, i knew that it was going in a hood so i built it with scrap materals so I didn't sink any more cash into it. I am trying to save up for a ac70/ac110 to mod into a fuge so i can get that heater and extra filter outta the display

let me know when ya wanna do all LEDs....i could probably help ya DIY something for ~$125ish worth of materials & have no heat issues or need to change bulbs forever (in reef terms LOL)

that sounds like a fun project, id like to do it, probally be a while till i could afford though. My fish budget is shoestring! I wanted to make this a 5.5 display with a 5,5 sump home built stand and all but after adding it up it was not in the budget! mabe someday!

nice...with the glass top, i assume for evap control i would be very tempted to take the glass out of the reflector...as you are losing a tonne of light to refraction...

nice little tank. dude, put a black background on the back. you'll be so glad you did. your tank and everything in it would look so much better. they're selling an oil now that you rub on the plastic background that most people tape on and you just smooth it to the back of the tank and voila! it stays put but it's totally removable. do it!

you see my post about the Aquatic Critter selling the jbj24 hoodless tanks?? i'm seriously conflicted on getting one of those vs doing a sectionalized regular tank & something like this for the stand/canopy/fuge cover

you could probably incorporate some kind of nice custom-built separate fuge tank into something like that for pretty cheap. check Glass Contractors of TN in Lavergne for real good prices on cut glass (615.793.6884)....i got some pieces cut from them when i didn't want to go all the way to dickson & glasscages
