Guys I took some dry rock from my basement I got about a year ago and put it in a tank with salt just to begin the curing process. The smell is deadly. What's happening to my house? I don't want a divorce but I'm afraid that when she comes home I'm doomed.

It's curing. Don't panic, the smell will go down. Give it time. If you have a skimmer you can run it will help speed up the process. So will adding any bacteria you can add.

Dead decaying matter in the rock. It will eventually pass, but the significant other might think otherwise.

The smell of death is a good thing. It's doing what it's supposed to do.

The first few days are the worst but I can recall a lingering smell for a couple weeks every time I've cycled new rock.

why not do that outside......if its really that bad you might want to give it a acid bath or something

+1, if the smell is that bad I would definitely give it a acid bath.... for phosphates alone
