Ok, I need a FINAL answer on this one....

Ok, I would like to know the answer to this question once and for all. How far does everyone keep their Tridacna crocea from their MH bulbs???

I have a 29 gallon tank, with a 250 watt 10K XM bulb, with 2 - 32 watt PC Actinics. The bulbs are 9 inches from the water's surface, and it is at the MOST, 22-23 inches from the bulbs, to the top of the sand bed. I want to place a clam in the dead center of the tank, (and the bulbs), at around 20 inches depth.

I have told by people who have kept clams for years that I would have no problem keeping ANY clam in my tank and could keep a Tridacna crocea at the lower levels of my tank where it would be very happy.

I have also been told that their is NO WAY I could keep a Tridacna crocea at around 20 inches from the bulb. Yet, I look at photos of tanks with Tridacna crocea, and see them at this depth, or even deeper, with the same lighting I have!!! What gives?!

Thanks for any input anyone can provide on this!!

I keep mine about 8 inches from top of water and my 400W sits about 8 inches from the top of the water...so approx 16 inches to the first one. The other one sits closer to the bottom. I've notice the one closer to the light grows a lot faster.

So IMO, you can keep it about 20" from the light...it just may now grow as fast

You won't kill your clam by having it that far from your bulb. I agree with the above...I think the worst that could happen would be slowed growth.

No offense, but you have enough posts that you should know that there is never going to be a "FINAL" answer to questions like this. Give it a try and see how it works for you.

Not a problem! I have the answer I was looking for. I felt that I was being given a run around by an "expert." I just wanted a plain simple answer, and now I got it. Thanks everyone! :)
