OK lets talk filtration...

so I have been out of the hobby for a cpl years. it's time to get back in and trying to keep it some what simple. not gonna set up my 75. but thinking of doing a 40br with a 40br sump. i have alot of the tank goodies like heaters, reef angle controller, a HOB filter from my QT tank etc.

my vision is a LPS, macro, sponge, gorgonian, mushroom tank.
i have always wanted to do an ATS filtered tank but think that might take out to much nutrients? the skimer i have (reef ouctopuss) is way to big but could work as the only form of filtration i guess.

so what are your guys thoughts? does anyone out there in macro land have a mixed reef and what are you using for filtration?

looking to get that nice balance of clear h20 but where the macrso will grow.

How about no filtration? I ran my tank as mixed reef/macro for a while and found that nuisance algae growth went down, glass stayed cleaner, and my LPS were happier after I turned my skimmer off. Never went back.

yeah I thought about that too! but I think ppl like us are on the edge of reefing.
tell me more about your tank please.
do you do h20 change if so how much and how often? specs and of course we all want photos :D

Definitely on the edge! Check out my tank thread here for the details.
Water changes are only incidental, usually when I screw something up (like this week when I dosed Excel and trace elements at full strength without testing ahead of time!)
I'd like to see if I can avoid water changes long-term.

If you pick up a dose of food - can contain only tank with pump flow, light and heating.
Water changes, I do not do more than 2 years! Supplements of calcium, magnesium, iodine ..... - I do not use!

Here is my example -

But I have my own approach to the marine aquarium - based on the basis of tap water without any filtering.
Topping up the evaporated water from the saltwater aquarium

Tap water (also without any filtering) overturned water changes.
Tap water contains everything you need for a saltwater aquarium.

This is just my experience and understanding - I do not recommend to use it! (tap water)

True - on this and warned not to repeat my experience with tap water.

P.s. tap water have to complete the understanding of the situation in my marine aquarium.

beautiful tank. yes there are many ways to achieve the balance in the Sw tank. I personally like biology over technology.
I think I am going to go with a skimmer less set up and use an up flow ATS along with LR.

I hope the ATS does not over fliter the tank so I can't grow macros....but if it does then I am gonna set up a 20L macro tank. so it's a win win either way :D
