Old live sand being treated for phosphate?

I’ve had a bunch of old sand that I pulled out of my last display that has been sitting outside in a 50 gallon trashcan for over a year I’m wondering how to properly remove the phosphates so when I add it to the new display it will not give me extreme spikes.

I would just rinse it out with a garden hose (in batches) until it runs clean. Put it in the tank with rodi + salt and let the cycle do its thing.
