Old rookie back from dead..10g Nano (pics)

Hi guys, Love the site. Way better than the others..Here is a pic of my 3 day old 10g. Just got the light delivered today. Tell me what you think, sorry for the crap on glass I gotta get a magnetic cleaner. Here are specs on tank

10g AGA
Aquaclear 50 HOB filter
Maxijet 600
50W heater
13-14 lbs of LS
17 lbs of Fiji LR (lol i went in wanting 7-8 lbs and came out with 17 they had no small rocks...oh well my small rocks will come from my frags i get)
SmartPaq 40 watt (10000°K daylight and 460 nanometer actinic)
1 lunar light

Well tank is 3 days old today.. got my test kit and amonia was zero nitrate was nominal and nitrite was nominal as well I know good and well it isnt ready yet oh and PH was low 7's. How do you feel about kick starting the cycle with a piece of shrimp or something?

i think you just started your cycle with the sand and LR . Your proces is just still beggining you need to put some stability or cycle in it so the process is fast. Your ammonia will go sky high in about 1 week then after 2 weeks it should go down. Another week will go by then your nitrites will go sky high. Wait a week or 2 for then to go down. Do a water change then your nitrates will go down. You might be able to put in something small then but leave it for a few months before you put anything sencitive in.eg.(corals, invertebrates, large fish).

The reason im telling you to wait a few weeks or months is because your tank at that very young age is volnerable to spikes on ammonia, nitrite & nitrate. These spikes will kill your fish. thats why you should start SLOW........... Keep us updated

Rather than forcing a cycle with a piece of dead shrimp feed the tank a pinch of fish food every day. That feeds the life that came on the rocks and helps maintain bacteria levels. If you artificially "spike" the ammonia you risk killing off the life you paid for buying live rock/sand. If the rock isn't cured it'll create it's own cycle, if it was well cured you could have little if any cycle.

Nice start, I prefer larger rocks as to alot of little ones anyway! What brand heater is that and where did you get it?!

Thx its a 50W Tetra from Wally World 13 bucks. It "SAYS" it has automatic thermostat in it so far so good. but I am watching very closely.

cool tank. i have the current smartpaq 65 watt fixture on my 10g and it works great. this is a pretty neat setup
