Old Sand: Can you re-use?

Soon I will be transfering things to my new setup. I have heard differing opinions on reusing your sand.

I know I can use a few cups of sand to seed the new stuff going in my new tank, but could you somehow rinse the old sand and then use it, say in your sump?

Should you even bother with it?

Every time I've moved my tank I have rised my sand thouroughly with tap water and resused...

When I moved the sand from the 75 to the 125 I dumped it into the water, stirred it around and skimmed the crap out of it for a week before I did anything else. The goal was to skim out the nasties from the sand while preserving the life in the sand. it worked great. I also had the time to do that and had a place to keep the livestock alive before adding it to the 125.

When I moved my 240 (1/2" deep, setup for 2 years) to the 90 I reused the sand with out doing anything to it.

Then when I moved from the 90 to the 180 all I did was add another 40lb bag to the bottom, and then put all the old sand from the 90 on top of that, again with out doing anything.
