on breaking glass

There is a girl on my swim team whos boyfriend works at a LFS. we (the Girl and I) have had a fight because her boyfriend said that even the smallest mantis could smash glass, and are unable to do so unless the walls are 3/4" acryllic. can someone back me up here?:hmm2:

He's full of it. According to most of the info that I have seen on here, and according to everything I have read from Dr. Roy, the most that anything but the most full-size peacock can do is chip the glass. Now, if you're talking about the full grown, old O.S. shrimp, then they'll shatter glass, but usually don't.

Ive seen my ~6 inch peacock miss a ghost shrimp in midair and smash the glass before on a few occasions and, of course, no damage...

My 4 inch male peacock struck the glass of his former 6g nano cube when he missed a goldfish and it didn't do anything. I did move him to a 12g acryllic, however.

I caught my almost 3" Peacock today digging down to the bottom glass of my 12DX Nano Cube, strike it repeatedly in the same spot, and not cause any cracks. He then proceeded to beat the crap out of the front glass and nothing.

The fact that she is red in color generally means, atleast for peacocks, that it is a she. This is not always the case but I am 90% sure your he is a she.

you can sex them by looking for their gonopods, or lack there-of.
If you see a pair of "kickstands" where i circled, then you've get yourself a boy....

My peacocks are both living in 12 Eclipses, and they are fine. Homes in their new 25 and 30 respectively will come soon enough, but they do all rignt in smaller, as long as you make plans to move them to bigger digs when they get larger. Both of mine are in the 4-4.5" range, btw.

Depends on how much you feed it.

No, not all mantises can break glass, I fail to see how a plantonic mantis could break glass thicker than it is long. I've held my former G. V. in a glass jar and a friend acctualy had him pop in his hand and while it was felt throught the jar there wasn't any damage.

well i been wanting to get a mantis for my 12 but my mom says i can only get one if its not a peacock....she said smithiie and wennerae are acceptable....now i like the look of the smithiie and i have been searching for a little over a month now and there is nowhere i can get one....expecially in chicago....the only mantis that seems available for me to get is a mantis via the internet....so i was wondering if i feed krill everyother day and keep a supply of hermits and snails in there for it....about how long would a smaller peacock be able to live in a 12 gallon before i have to upgrade to a 20L?

i can see....but my first choice was actually a peacock but my ma thinks it will crack the glass....so thats why i was going to go with a smithiie but i cant find one....a peacock is much more feasible....can anyone answer my question on how fast it will grow?

Very slowly, about 7-11% per molt if i remember correctly, they molt once every 3-4 months, will also depend on how much your feed them and how nutritious, I wouldnt worry about it breaking glass, that myth is really overexaggerated, give it a nice environment and keep it happy with a nice secure dark burrow, and it will not try and break out... at least in my opinion... BTW the more floor space the better, so a 20-30 Long tank would be ideal
