I came across a nice carnation with purple and hot pink colors at a LFS. I have MH lighting in which the clerk said would be no problem with this type of coral. Also, he mention these corals don't depend on photosynthesis for growth and my MH lighting wont be a problem..Have people had success with these types of corals ? Thx !

i heard its best to leave them out in the wild, unless you have a crazy established, and LARGE 120+ tank which has been up and running for years. people dont know wht they eat or how they work, so its best to leave it for mature big tanks.

just like the idea with the "flame scallops" or gorgonians, etc,

flame scallops will eventually starve.... they're like the orange linkia starfish.

they are filter feeders (the gorgs and scallop, not starfish obviously), and are not very photosynthetic, so unless you have a big mature tank, not for you. i've had yellow gorg that died,, algae grew on it, it wasnt the best coral. so only get if u have a nice tank.

there is a guy on RC in Glendale who grows the yellow gorgs like crazy...can't think of his name atm, but he just feeds his reef roids.

I also had a flame scallop for a long time, it only died when I got too lazy to target feed it.

Okay it looks like I am going to reconsider buying this coral. My tank has been up for about a year now. Sounds like a 50/50 chance to get this thing growing (surviving)...

i think he meant, 90/10 that i'll die.... not 50/50 lol

dont do it buddy :)

:strooper: ok, I took off the retard mask.

good waste of $40...but now that is too late...you already have it...now if you want any chance of keeping it alive, you need to first go read the ENTIRE thread of the Dendronepthyta (misspelled?) topic...it's around 40 pages, but it has guys with success with these. I'll shoot you the link later on...in the mean time, find out about reef snow...the theory is that these beautiful corals eat the bacteria that grow on the slime of other corals, the bacteria that eat detritus, so the tank needs to have lots of organic compounds floating around in the water column, thus causing a dirty tank,,,but the tank needs to be kept with low nitrates...good luck, and any help i can give let me know....the coral will slowly starve to death...it won't just croak, it will shrink very slowly, between one month and six months, but nonetheless will die, unless you've done lots of studying and are willing to do all the extra stuff to keep it alive. These things have been known to grow multiple feet in days-weeks, so there's plenty in the wild...but IMO, they should be regulated and sold only to those who are licensed to keep them...but that's another topic.

Siapin,

Looking forward for that link. Had a rough start and it shrank considerably after a few hours in the tank and stayed that way all night. I focused a power jet on it and it seems to enjoy the extra flow. This am it opened back up and "Wow", the colors on this thing are unreal ! I been spot feeding for now with DTs today. Also, I have been using the turkey baster to stir up the sand bed to release some detris. Not only does the carnation like this I found out my toadstool joins in on the action to. I finally got my PH controller on my reactor last week along with my ATO. I guess this can only help with having success. I ll keep ya posted..
