??' on Kalc dosing

thanks discocarp...i just ordered it so i will start using as soon as it gets here. does it tell you how to dose on diff. size tanks...i have a 55g w/75g sump

It will have some instructions on it, but since you are dosing kalk too they pretty much go out the window.

This calculator works well and has OB info:

Just make changes slowly. First figure out how much you need to get it to the levels you want (the initial correction) and do it over some time (don't exceed approx 1ml per gal, less is even better). Then keep dosing the kalk, find out whether it is keeping your levels ok or not. If not, see how much you drop per week, use the calculator to compute the weekly amount you need to add, and then split it over 7 days.

Don't forget to test your magnesium before you start.

ok sounds good thanks alot...i will start slowly and gradually build it up to where i want it. thanks for that link that is very helpful. i appreciate it

But I still dont understand how you have it setup, I currently have a 30g reservoir with plumb to a mag-5 pump controled by a floa switch and timer to prevent the float swith sticking and flooding.

My plan was to add kalk to the reservoir, topoff the tank from the reservoir until it reaches the last few gallons and then start over again.

Is this how you have your setup?

Basically yes, except my pump is much slower so it doses almost dropwise over many hours when on.

One concern with your setup is how much is doses with each triggering of the float switch. Adding 1% of the tank (or sump) volume will boost the pH in the tank (or sump) by about 0.6 pH units.

Well my drum of topoff water is located outside around 30ft from my tank thats the reason for the large pump.

My contoler (timer) is turning on the pump ever hour for 2min between the hours of 10:00pm and 10:00am (basically when the lights are off) and the dose is a steady drip into my sump. THe float switch is used to turn off the topoff pump once the correct level of water is reached.

THanks for the help
Mark
