While many relish doing maintenance, I don't. Simple maintenance is more important to me than simple systems.
That said, I think the biggest trend in the hobby is a broader realization that maturity levels impact requirements. It seems to me that, where all other things are equal, simplicity and maturity are inversely proportional. The types of intervention needed are also affected by system maturity. Nutrient control might need the most intervention in young systems. However, for very mature systems ca, alk, & other chemistry issues might need more help.
