Oncasso (Onyx-Picasso) Questions

Today I went to an LFS and looked at a small bunch of Percs. They were all bothers and sisters. The parents were an ORA grade A Picasso and an Onyx. Long story short, I bought one and the LFS is gonna keep it until my new tank cycles.

It's not the best picasso you'll ever see, but it was a good deal and it was my favorite. They are from a local breeder and every one of the bunch was about
1/4"-1/3". I'm guessing that's only a few months old. Anyways, I was wondering if he'll get more pattern on him. I'm fine with the pattern on him now and I like it, but I'm curious to see if he'll get any more splotches and stuff.

I can get pictures in a few weeks when I pick him up. My tank is finishing cycling and I didn't want to rush the tank by putting him in, but if I didn't get him he was probably the next to go since he was the prettiest (at least to me). :)

Sorry I read that wrong i thought it was 1-1/3" I would guess the white might come in some more at that size, thats really small. Is his third stripe there? Usually picassos get really black. The one in my avatar still has not got all of its black but if I were you I would expect a lot of black.

Well I don't know exactly how much black the Onyx parent had, but I'll expect a bunch of black. I can't remember clearly, but I think his tail stripe was half way in. By that, I mean it was fully there, but it was half-faded.

He's not the nicest picasso I've seen, but he's really cute. I'm going to pick him up on Saturday the 15th. The store said they'll definitely get in another batch of them within the next year, but probably within a few months. Hopefully I get to the pickings in time to get a half decent one. :lmao:

After the one I've already bought has been in the tank by himself for a few months will he turn into a female? Also, do you think there will be any problems adding another smaller, male Onyx-Picasso to the tank with him? :spin1:
 
I can't wait to see the pics. I plan on pairing up and Onyx and Picasso and I've been very interested to see what their offspring would look like.
 
Just remember, they are still just a Percula with a color variant. What about the Occs you already posted about? Are you putting the Perc in the same tank as that pair of Occs?

I have my Occys in my BioCube 14 currently. I got the BioCube 29 HQI and it's still cycling, so I'm having the store hold my new Onyx-Picasso until the tank is cycled. ;)
I might move my Occys to the BioCube 29 HQI and put the Onyx-Picasso in my BioCube 14, but I haven't decided on that yet.
 
There wont be much more white on your clownfish. The white bars might come in more, but not more pattern. It will blacken quite a bit, but that could take quite some time.

I guess it's a good thing that I only got the one I got because the others didn't have much pattern at all. I'll try and get to the next batch early to pick my clownfish out a good mate. :D
 
If you want more pattern you might want to order the picasso you want. I went to LFS here in San Diego, told him exactly what i wanted. You see them in my avatar.

I'm on a small budget and I really like Picassos. The LFS that has them gets them from a local breeder which is why they are on the less expensive side. The owner of that LFS said that he would charge $200 for ORA grade A picassos, so the Onyx-Picasso mix is all I could get on my budget. I'm not settling for something I don't like as much, because to me the Onyx-Picassos are very beautiful fish and as long as they're pretty and different from my other two pairs of clowns then I'm happy. The one place that was selling grade A ORA picassos within my budget is closing and can no longer order me stuff, but as I said I'm very happy with just Onyx-Picassos. :)
 
i believe picasso clownfish originally came from onyx parents and just had extreme misbars. i would expect these clowns to be like other picassos.

The Picasso Percula is a selectively bred True Percula Clownfish with erratic misbarring, similar to a jigsaw puzzle piece, covering over 75% of its body. A very small percentage of offspring of Picasso pairs retain these characteristics. Each fish is unique with its own distinctive misbarring. Because of the limited occurrence of the misbarring, availability of the Picasso Percula is limited.

Picasso Percula Clownfish are hardy and docile in an aquarium. They will associate with host anemones, particularly carpet anemones.

sort of a useless description with regard to their origin. i wont assume what you might not know, but i'll just state that both onyx and picasso clownfish are true perculas. each are selectively bred for certain characteristics.

Your statement is only half correct.I do believe ORA bred Onyx Percula to get the Picasso markings, hence all the black coloration. Your statement about Onyx being selective bred is not completely correct. Onyx can be a natural occurrence in the wild. Sustainable Aquatics shows a pair on their web site that were wild caught in the Solomon Islands.
