One skimmer for now and the future

Hi Jeremy,

I have a situation in which I am starting a 120g tank with a 35g sump and plan to have a predominantly SPS tank with a heavy fish load. However, in the next few years, I want to build a 500 gal plus system. I am interested in the Bubble King 300 external Gen 2 skimmer for the 500g system, but want to know if I purchased that currently, can I still run it on the smaller system for now. I would prefer to not have to buy a smaller skimmer now and then a second skimmer later. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Greg

Hi Greg,

In my opinion the 300 is going to be a bit big for that size system. It's not to say it wouldn't work though, as I have seen skimmers much larger than that on smaller systems than what you have work just fine.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Greg,

I would try and get the 300 to work on the smaller system for you. I really think it would work, as I have seen them work on systems that small. The biggest key is just make sure you have the nutrient load in there to help it build the foam head.

Shoot me an email directly to jeremy@premiumaquatics.com and we can talk more about it in depth.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Can an oversized skimmer be run on a timer to cut back on skimate production and allow it to work on a smaller system? Seems like this could allow you room to grow.
