Sitting in my open top planted Salvini cichlid tank. 6 inches from 80w of shop light.

I might try planting a few in substrate to encourage more rapid growth. They're part of a long term (clearly!) Archerfish project.

Hi Psyfalcon,

good-looking growth. Perhaps planting them in miracle mud or similar would be good. I also wonder if skimmate would be a good fertiliser, might be worth a try...

What type of mangrove? Are you monitoring magnesium levels in the water? Do you dose any fertilizers? I would stay away from dosing skimmate as it would most likely cause an algae bloom.

Its a 55 gallon FRESHWATER planted tank. Red Mangroves.

The only fertilizer is the cichlid and pleco poop. Nitrogen is not a problem in this case, unless I do move them to a dedicated tank. I have not checked Mg, but is it important since mine are being grown in FW? As I understand it, mangroves get rid of sodium by taking in Mg, but I have only trace levels of Na and Mg in this tank.

Root growth has been disappointing though as they have just recently sent out the hair like roots. It seems mine went to growing leaves first. I was hoping to get more root growth so I could begin growing prop roots.

It might be time to move them to a more dedicated tank. If I do that, my fish are in my room, in the basement, no natural light, what should I consider lighting it with?

As I understand it Red Mnagroves are adapted to grow in full strength seawater which may explain the lack of root growth. Mine is lit with a 65 watt outdoor PC fixture found at Home Depot, and has been growing very well.

If you should decide to salt the water its in it needs to be acclimated extremely slow, like over a period of weeks even months.
