I recently bought my 4 year old son a 10 gal tank that was up and running. He would like to put a clownfish in it.i was thinking about an onyx. They are cool looking fish, but not sure about price , how hard they are to get and how they would do in this tank. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Im in SoCal and they are not as difficult to get a hold of as they were 2-3yrs ago. I'll occassionally see them in the LFS(s) and again, the price tag is not as bad as it was a few years back.

I'm starting to see more Picasso's at the LFS(s) down here too.

GL!

any clown will do great in a 10g tank. you could put a pair in there if you want to.

if you want a nice pair of onyx, xtry looking for a Rods Onyx. Picasso's are awesome. some cheaper grade B picasso's sell for 30-50 per clown. sky is the limit for clowns on what you want. if you want a pair of Black and white they go for 30 - 50 per up to 200+ for snowflakes, or platinum's. almost all clowns are easy to keep and maintain.

.

I don't agree with this statement at all. Maroons, Tomatoes, and Saddlebacks all need bigger than a 10 gal. For a 10 gal. set-up, I recommend occellaris.

From what I have seen in the FLA area, Onyx clowns will usually go for around $50 - $100 depending on size, age and lineage.

What I would suggest, if you cannot find them locally is to order them in. There are a few hobbiests selling their babies on here for a decent price.

Eh, I wouldn't say percs are the only species. Ocelaris would Aldo work, and like the pink or orange skunks. Actually, as juvi's, almost any species would work -so long as you know that some of the maroon, clarki, tomato etc will get too large for your tank so you'll need an exit plan.

However, I'm a big fan of my onyx. I got them from Booyah's Reef. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1525244 he even has a color gaurantee!

Ocellaris get pretty big imo 10 gallon is not big enough for them. LA says minimum 20 gallon. Everybody has their own opinion though.

I have a breeding pair of onyx that just laid a clutch of approximately 300 eggs. A local and I are going to try to grow them out and see what happens. I'll keep everyone posted as to how we do and hopefully we'll have some nice onyx clowns to share with RC :)
