Open brain placement question

I'm thinking about getting one and am wondering if the can be placed in the rock work, or do they need to be on the sand bed like a plate coral?

Ok I googled it, place of soft sand, rock will cause abrasion of the soft tissue.
Sorry for the lame question.

they like the sand but i have kept them on live rock for long epriods of time just place so their skeleton sticks over top the top of the live rock then the tissue should even touch
