mine are on bare bottom, and are doing better than they were when they were on sand. the sand just irritated them (when it got on their mouth area
 
They usually are considered a sand coral. However, as mentioned constant sand over their mouth can be a problem. I have had to keep my watchman goby's territory clear. If placed on rock work be careful not to damage the soft tissue that wraps over the edge. That is the main problem with placing them on rock work, but it can be over come.
