Open or Closed Top

Does anyone have any evidence or data on whether SPS's do better with an open or closed top. I have a friend that swears that the acryilic top decreases the MH light penetration so much that the SPS growth and health suffers.

Thoughts, data?

The acrylic top will decrease the amount of light from the MH, especially if it is dirty.

I think most people run open tops... but if you have really dirty air (lots of visible particles floating around), the acrylic top may be useful?

you will want an open top, it is so much easier to aquascape and get into the tank when you need to

Knock on wood but I switched to an open top and run three 400 watt de's. MY corals look wonderful! Had acrylic tank with cross brace and was not as good.

Open tops help with cooling also. Easier to get into.

I HATE HOODS!! IF you have ever had an Eclipse hood, you will too.
