I need suggestions I have a 75 gallon tank up for about 5 years and I hate the glass lid i have for it it looks bad it gets salt all over it and it really stops a lot of deep light. I want to take it off but im afraid of fish trying to carpet surf. Any suggestions with this and let me know of the success rate of open top tanks please thanks for your help in advance

Put egg crating over the tank. I use to complain about the salt on my glass lids until I post a thread about it. You can find it in lighting section at Home Depot. You will have to cut it down to fit. Use a small but sharp pair if wire snippers

I hate tops they hold in heat and block out light after the salt creep gets on it. So ditto on the egg crate

A lot of ppl use eggcrate (florescent light diffuser) to cover their tanks. Keeps the jumpers in and lets the light thru. works well for most...

I've also seen one guy that made a frame and stretched some sort of plastic netting over it. He said it worked great and let more light in than the eggcrate he's been using. Sorry, I can't tell you what exactly it was he used...

here is my problem im scared that the egg crate might melt i have 2 150what hqi bulbs do yo think that will be to hot?

It will be fine as long as you have enough room between the light and the eggrate. I have two 150's and was fine with the lights being about 8 inches from the surface.
