I've seen crushed coral used in reef tanks successfully, but its usually not recommended -- tends to produce nitrates. Should be good for a fish only tank though; fish are not very sensitive to nitrates.

When I started my tanks I had a 8 inch CC bed. After several years I could no longer control the hair algae. I found out that the open spaces between each particle fills with detritus. Finally bit the bullet and took it all out with a shop vac. It was filthy!. I replaced it with 2 - 3 inches of Southdown and am very happy with it.
I've seen crushed coral used in tanks but I would stick to keeping it in something like a calcium reactor. I would suggest Caribsea seaflor special grade reef sand
