*research how bioballs work in a biological filter
*examine the biological filtration options available
*make your own educated decision whether or not to use bioballs
really. Who cares what others think? Each aquarium is different.

thanks. I don't use bioballs. That doesn't mean they're totally useless. Bioballs provide a surface area for aerobic bacteria to rapidly convert highly toxic ammonia and nitrites to nitrates. Bioballs do nothing to rid an aquarium of nitrates and that's why I favor the use of liverock and/or deep sandbeds for marine aquarium biological filtration. I also recommend using a protein skimmer.
I have/use bioballs. I also have a sulphur denitrifier. The combination allows me to feed a bit heavy and also contain a bit heavier population. The wastes are quickly converted and the sulphur DN helps eat up the nitrates. Really works for me.
