Opinion on clams as CUC

There's this vendor on EBAY, who sells tiny clams, oysters, and scallops as clean-up-crew. What're your thoughts on this?

Unless you've got a serious phytoplankton problem they offer no benefit to your tank.

What about the scallops? Would they do well, and would they be entertaining?

If you dont have experience, the scallop will die within a couple weeks, if you have experience it may die in a year, scallops are best left in the ocean

They would be entertaining in the fact that you will waste your money in purchasing them as they just aren't suited for long term survival in an aquarium. Some people have managed to keep them for a year, but its VERY RARE, the average life time is a about a month or two.

The clams, scallops, and oysters all need copious amounts of phytoplankton in order to do anything other than starve to death. They simply will not survive in the manner that the seller is suggesting. Not to mention the fact that they are temperate species that prefer cool water.
