opinions on buying used ro/di unit

I have been told by a couple people that buying used ro/di units can be risky in sense that if the membrane dries up, it's useless and must be replaced. Does anyone have any knowledge of this or can give any opinions. I'm just trying to figure out if buying a used unit would be worth it if the membrane happens to dry up from the time it's shipped to me.

Buying a used unit, I would consider the filters in it used up or no good. Depending on the number of filters/stages, your looking at $70 +/- to replace them all. That's what it cost me to replace all four on my unit.
So if someone is selling a used $200 unit for $100, keep in mind your looking at quite a bit to add new filters. But if it's a super good deal, by all means, get it and replace the filters.

the filters are a month old ...I'm not worried about the filters as much as what I heard about the membrane drying up...that would be 35$ there. Are the membranes no good if they dry up?

The way I hear it, that's correct. They tend to clog when dried out.
Maybe it could be bagged in ro/di water? Just a thought.

I wouldn't take a used RODI unless it came with all new filters......or if it was given to me.....but then I'd replace all the filters!

Agreed with all, I probably would only consider if the unit was at least half price, that way I would replace the membrane and DI media regardless and still come out on top.
