Opinions on Creature Comforts-Binghamton NY

Hi, im a new member on here and im just reading up on saltwater and im wondering on you thoughts about this store. Im gonna visit it in a week and im gonna be purchasing some harlequin rasbora for my freshwater. Do you recommend in the future to buy saltwater from their store? How is the management and stuff like that. Do the staff make you want to :uzi: them lol. Thanks

I see you're in Cortland. Don't bother with Creature Comforts. Go up to Syracuse and go to ABC Reefs. The folks at CC, some are nice and cordial (the owner is a real *****), they are generally saltwater dumb. They know very little about the saltwater creatures they have and have little to no desire to research and learn about them. I was in there a while back looking for an ich treatment and they handed me a copper based solution and told me that it's safe for my reef tank!!!

In my experience.... STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!!

Welcome to the board!

Ditto what truebeliever said. Definatly go to ABC Reefs in Syracuse. The horror stories I could tell you about Creature Comforts but I won't on a public board. Trust us.. Go to ABC Reefs.

thanks for the answers. i never heard of ABC reefs. ill have to check them out. thank you for you opinions. im stuck in shack village with a 500 sq foot pet store lol.

Creature Comforts is OK if you are in the area, looking for something fairly basic, and know EXACTLY what you want/need (i.e. won't be needing help from the staff). But if you have to drive 45 minutes anyway, then ABC is a much better option. More variety, better prices, healthier livestock, and MUCH better staff. Tim and Dave are great, and the "new guys" seem to know their stuff too.

ithe problem is, is that im a rookie. im not gonna set up a saltwater tank for at least a year. I will have to do a lot of reading and learn my stuff now so i save money down the road and have a successful tank. Im really into planted tanks and cichlid mbuna right now so i know that if you prepare up ahead then it will pay off. my first tank will be mostly 40 gallon breeder and i will start with live rock and fish. I will get slow slowly into corals. What are the easiest ones to start out with? I would like to keep lighting around 4x39w T5 Ho with a tek or ati fixture. Thanks!

You should be in great shape for softies and/or LPS corals with a set-up like that. And if you can resist the urge to start earlier than you're planning (alas, I know I couldn't, when I finally decided to get into the hobby), you have plenty of time to read up while you wait!

well i wouldnt wait, but im only 15 :strooper: and :strooper:i want to wait untill im working. I dont want to pay 50 bucks for coral when im not on an income. My parents dont mind my planted tank and my cichlid tank but if im gonna be running three tanks then they wont be to happy.:worried2:

CC is really a "ok" shop if u know exactly what u want and dont need any assistance like someone just mention on this forum. I'm semi new to this hobby but when i was just getting started i was reading like crazy and learning as much as i could... Ive learn from many experiences that its better to "self educate" so you dont have to rely on the staff as much espically in an area like binghamton where there really isnt too many options when it comes to LFS.

Yea was just in CC yesterday and wow. The facility is ok looking but the live stock was horribly ill. There is no flow for the corals in the zero edge tank and it showed in the coral health. But yes there is no place within an hour that has a knowledgeable staff. That is why there aren't alot people in the hobby around this area.

CC is only good for getting frozen food, feeder fish for our triggers and lionfish, or dry goods. I have never seen the saltwater livestock healthy and I avoid going there....The crew up at ABC is awesome and they really care about the hobby. When we want healthy well cared for livestock, we go to to Syracuse.....

Ditto with thepircs - Anytime I have been over in that area and stop, I always leave sad. Tanks had an oil film and fish just looked like they were on their last fin.
We don't have any stores with a huge / great selection, but I like Rick out at Nature. He may not have a lot to pick from (seldom corals) but the fish are always healthy and the owner is actually a nice guy.
