ORA Hawkins and Coral Rx?

Fool me twice, shame on me...

Has anyone else had a problem dipping the ORA Hawkins in Coral Rx? I bought a frag in December, brought it on a 13 hour drive back home with me, dipped it in my previously usual dip of Salifert Flatworm Exit and Lugols (separate dips) and placed it into QT after acclimating it.

It grew great...and the time came for it to move into my grow-out tank. By then, I had been using Coral Rx for quite a while, so I was going to do my usual dip to make sure the grow-out tank stays clean and that I didn't miss something during QT. I accidentally broke a frag off, so I glued it onto a new plug and stuck it back into QT. Within about 5 minutes of the dip on the mother (strength recommended on the bottle and the dosage I've used previously), the coral was extremely stressed. I pulled it out immediately. After gluing the mother to a frag plug, the coral looked even worse, but it went into the grow-out tank.

The frag in the QT looked pretty bad, but survived and grew well. The mother colony was lost except one polyp (still living). I figured maybe it was the gluing process that caused the corals to look bad since the frag wasn't dipped.

Recently I received AEFW on a frag...and I decided to dip all corals in my QT. Guess what...the little Hawkins guy was dipped again in Coral Rx. Once again, within only a couple of minutes at the recommended dosage, it was dead.

So has anyone else had problems with Coral Rx and the Hawkins? I figured the 13 hour drive + Lugols + FWE dips would be death to the coral before Coral Rx. I've had great success with Coral Rx otherwise. I don't know. :(

I have been using coral RX with very good result, but never did with hawkin (and other Turaki). To me lugol is much stressful to SPS than coral RX.

Dood I have tried several times with Revive and Coral Rx.. EVERY TIME goner... I've heard guys having better luck with TMPCC but I haven't tried it.

Just that coral or with other corals too? So far I've had great luck with Coral Rx and every other coral...just not the Hawkins. I switched to Coral Rx b/c it was supposed to be more gentle (and kill more flatworms according to that AA article).

Hawkins + dips = iffy. Been several threads here on the topic. Very sensitive coral for me with dipping. I've lost two from dips. In my latest tank, it was the first coral in and I didn't dip at all. Doing great for me.

I took a chance (sence I got mine from a very trusted local) And just put it right in my display. Has grown great over the last 8 months. I think it is one that you are best to get from a trusted local and skip the dip.

Good to know, does this apply to all A. Turaki?

Good I did not dip my hawkin, it was from trusted source.

I used normal strength CoralRX dip on my hawkin's and it never showed any signs of being overstressed. I guess I got lucky.

Hummm, interesting. I've been off RC for quite a while, so I guess I missed the threads about the sensitivity of the coral. I don't think I could ever just "get the coral from a trusted source and not dip". It might just be a coral I live without (or retry dipping with the Lugols since that worked the first time.) I don't trust anyone when it comes to someone else's coral going into my tank. :)

Have dipped a Hawkins twice in Revive and both times the coral was DEAD the next day. Everything else was fine, Red Planet, Borealis, Purple Plasma, Slimers, bellinas, ETC...

I just had a a catastrophe with Coral RX Whish I had read this first. So, I wanted to dip my stuff and followed the instructions to a T and lossing a hawkins and purple plasma as we speak. It also ****ed off my pearlberry and screaming birdsnest. I was retroactively dipping the few peices I hadnt when I first learned about dipping.

Everything else looks better but seriously 2 frags out the window at once ;( ......

Huh, my Purple Plasma seemed fine when I dipped it the other day in Coral Rx. It looked a little bit upset, but nothing unusual for being brought home, taken off the base, accidentally dropped on the floor, and then dipped. :-)

I know my Pearlberry was fine when I dipped it in the Lugol's & FWE treatments. I lost the colony in a tank crash, so I can't test that one out in Coral Rx. Sorry to hear you lost two frags.

Does anyone know what is in Coral Rx? It smells like Pine Sol or something (citrus eucalyptus - ish). LOL

I've dipped my corals in Revive from the beginning with only one issue, and it was with a hawkins. It was stressed but did survive and is growing well. I agree with the others, this is one coral that should not be dipped.
