orange based anemone

We got an anemone from the fish store, can't remember/find what type it is. Kind of looks like a pink tip anemone, although the tips are white and sometimes green, with an orange base. We were told that it would not sting. Although I had to move the anemone in the tank last night and suddently I felt a stinging from my wrist to my elbow. This morning it's got pink welts almost looking like mosquito bites. Does anyone know if this anemone could cause this?

I'm pretty sure all anemones have the ability to sting - they all have nematocysts (at least I think that's how it's spelled). I think the variable on whether or not we react is not only the strength of the nematocysts but our sensitivities. I think it's similar to bees. They've all got stingers, but some people react differently to them than others do.

I think some are probably stronger, as well as stickier so it's harder to get away.

I think it's very likely that the anemone caused pink welts, especially if you didn't touch anything else.

Yeah, I'd say it was probably the anemone...I'm sure we could get an ID on that anemone for you if you posted a picture!
