Anyone have any suggestions on these? I am looking to get one I know they need low lighting, calcium and a few other things.. Anyone know how hard they are to take care of?
imo, a pita. sorry i got mine.it's growing well but takes time to hand feed every day.that and every critter in the tank wants a share. i,ve been told to cover it with a soda bottle with the bottom cut off at feeding.. plus it stays closed all day, only opens when the lights are out.i feed it before work every day.
See Im looking for corals that do better at night. See I work all day and the tank that I want to put is in the bedroom, So when Im there reading its nice to have just the "moon lights" on. But it just seams like they are a PITA. LOL But there cool as heck haha.
There are a few other corals I have that I have to 'Spot Feed". But thanks for the info.
They are definately a high maintenance coral, and without adequate nutrient export feeding can quickly lead to nuisance algae. Still I find having mine to be very rewarding, watching it add new polyps is always exciting, and hopefully one day it will spawn. I feed mine a mix of finely shaved frozen mysis cube, frozen cyclopeeze, frozen rotifiers, and DT's oyster eggs.
They are fairly high maintenance if you feed it often (every 1-3 days) but if you only feed it once/week it will still do well although it won't be as likely to generate as many new polyps.
The others are right, they aren't photosynthetic and seem to prefer dark areas.
If you ever have to feed during the day you can squirt a little food at it and the polyps will start to open up after about 15 minutes... eventually it will start to get used to feeding during the day.
Personally I feed it about once a week in the early morning (7am) before leaving for work. You'll know if you are underfeeding when you see any of the polyps start to die off by showing the hard calcerous skeleton.
btw, quite sure this is classified as LPS...
