This is a long ways away but here is the beginning of this project. So I obtained my group of filefish. Pretty sure 4 female and 1 male.

Based on Matt's article they are currently being qt individually in 10 gallon tanks. So far 1 female is accepting cyclops and mysis off the bottom of the aquarium. Problem is the other 4 are not yet accepting prepared food and I have no source for frags ATM. If anyone in my area is willing to donate some frags to help these guys settle I would forever be in debt. Or anyone willing to donate not in my area I can pay shipping. Just need a source for some basic acri/pocci frags.

I wish you the best of luck with the breeding but you really should have found a source for frags before purchasing these fish. From what i understand most never do accept prepared foods.
 
Well my source for the filefish was for frags as well so I had a plan. Then they came in ahead of schedule and he was out of frags. I have 1 female eating prepared foods already. And instead of frags I'll be getting a few fist size colony's of branching monti tomorrow which I'll frag should help them settle, then I'll begin the long journey of weaning the remaining 4. Thanks I'll need the luck :) I'm determined though!

Also from my months of research and speaking with some of the people who have weaned or even attempted breeding most easily accept prepared foods it just takes time and patients. They whole myth they only eat or survive off coral was busted awhile back. Following Matt's article to a T should help me out some.

I live in france and I adore these fishes and I begin a project of breeding on pseudochromis, but I plan to try this fish, but my problem is the same that to obtain you from fishes which feed correctly.
I am going to follow your adventure with interest and I espere to be able to exchange with you on this sort(species)
 
Thanks and welcome. Picking up some good size M. Digitata colonies today. So hopefully they enjoy that. And then I take a deep breath and begin the long weaning process
 
If I had some frags (of anything! LOL) I would definitely be helping you out. Sadly, I just moved and all livestock had to be given away :( You'll find something though! ;) See if you can track down Tektite's source for her Acropora, she's doing an experiment with AEF (Acropora eating flatworms) and I bet you could use some FS dips (and maybe formalin or peroxide) to get rid of the pests. Free food! :D

Thanks. Hopefully I will be able to update with good new regularly. Got those 2 large digi colonies and fragged one up so hopefully they chow on it so I can relax some.
 
Well its early in the day but so far they don't want to touch the Monti I put in their tanks... Unfortunately if they don't eat that I have nothing else and their fate is certainly not a very good one :(
 
Basically being very difficult ATM. None ate the monti. Right now I'm just shotgun feeding them ova and Cyclops and hoping they are eating it. Its hard to watch them as it only makes them shyer. If anything this will serve as a great learning experience for the next round.
 
you have gotten on your local forum to see if anyone has frags available? maybe they'd like acros or something better than the montis... I have no idea, just throwing it out there. Also - is it possible they are eating the montis and you don't realize it? I just came across a video where someone had a HUGE growth of SPS with an orange spot in there.

I found this in a thread on what they'd eaten out of someones tank so far:
They look healthy and a bit thin, but not terribly thin. They are eating......corals. I have a range of sps frags in the tank and they have sampled some birdsnest, green slimer (their favorite), orange montipora of which I have a lot of and some milli. I knew this was very likely to happen and I am fine with it. I am interested to see the long term effects on the corals actually. They polyps retract but none seem to be missing that I can tell.

Ha ya I poked around on tcmas my local aquarium club and basically got flamed and banned.

I simply posted a few post in various sub forums seeking help finding sps frags for super cheap or anyone willing to donate to my breeding project because I was strapped at the time. Ya moderators blew me up saying I have to post in the classified and blah blah I'm not a member so I can't do that. They deleted all my posts so I kept posting looking for help. In no way was I asking to sell or buy frags at this point. And I got bashed pretty bad about breaking the rules and crap. And everyone was like who would I give you frags to kill them... It really ****ed me off that's the response I got when I'm taking the time and making an effort to breed these fish. But I can't do that if they die .

End rant.

That stinks, sorry to hear. I guess if they'd never tried to breed, and SPS are what thier main focus is, there's a gap of appretiation there. any signs they have eaten yet?
 
Well I obtained 5 specimens and all 5 are still alive now going on 2.5-3 weeks in my care. I had one get what looked like a swim bladder infection as she was stuck buoyant at the surface. She is being treated with furan-2 and is a fighter for sure still hanging in there.

Out of the other 4 I have 1 that looks questionable as to whether its eating or not. Still active and has med body weight.

The remaining 3 have the most potential and appear to be gaining body mass? Maybe its my eyes playing tricks but these 3 respond to food in the most promising manner and appear to be gaining weight. 1 female I can tell you started eating Cyclops and mysis after day 2. She picks off the bottom.
 
Only as a last resort, you can tube feed them :) But you have to be gentle or you can puncture their stomach or other organs.
