I'm sorry that you're having these problems.

With the little we've got to go on we'll need to do a little shooting in the dark.

It doesn't look like you've posted to the club forum since the switch so we'll pull out the old shotgun approach.

#1) If you are logged in then log out. If you aren't logged in then log in and log right back out.

#2) Clear your cookies and history one more time

#3) Try to login with a different computer (Preferably at a different location). This will help us decide whether the problem is with your computer or the host computer. In about every case so far it has been with the user's computer not clearing its head after the switch.

#4) With the switch to a different internet host some people have had to clear their DNS cache. This cache will contain domain name to IP address lookups as well as a list of domain names where it has failed looking up an IP address.

Click on "Start" then "Run" and in the box type "ipconfig /flushdns" (without the quotes of course) and press enter.

Let me know what happens. We'll get it working for you.

the site has been up and down a few times today

What symptoms? Getting 404's while other sites are available?

I'm checking on the site but we also need to keep open the possibility of other problems getting to the server.

Please send an email to the webmaster email account with any details.

I got a "problem with pHp nuke" message once

several "site unavailable" messages

and a couple timeouts

all pretty much during the time joe was having trouble posting. It seems to be ok this afternoon, but it isn't uncommon for it to go down mid morning

I'll pay closer attention next time......I just figured updates or maintenance were being done

If those were in the last week or two it wasn't because we had the site down for maintenance. It would have been something else. Thanks for letting me know.

So much trouble for one site is pretty abnormal :(

Hmmmmmm, I usually experience Reef Central giving repeated errors when its heavily loaded several times a week (returning errors when pulling up threads or searching - index problems) .

It turns out that one of SkinnyJoe's computer works just fine with the ORCA site and the other doesn't. That means that his problem is with his computer rather than the ORCA site. The same was true for another user too. Neither of them has let me know if they have tried all of the steps I've suggested, only that it works just fine on their other computer.

Last month the ORCA site was moved to a different host which is running different versions of php and mySQL than the old site. The phpNuke and phpBBS software has also been updated several revisions and in the case of phpNuke to a newer version(although there is a sign that there may have been a hiccup in the process). With these types of changes there typically are some kinks in the system but we believe that in the long run it will provide a faster and more reliable platform than before.

If you're having problems please post the specifics (including any error messages and time of day) on the ORCA site if you can or send email to webmaster @ o-r-c-a .com (Remove the spaces) if you cannot access the site.

Posting that you've had phpNuke errors isn't particularly helpful. We need to know what error, what you were doing, and when it happened if we stand a chance of fixing the problem.

Thank you Paul. As always your really doing a remarkable job. The club is very lucky to have both yours and Jim's support. Considering the fact that we just moved the site to an entirely new hosting service, we have had very little down time and very few hiccups. As expected of course I know there are always growing pains during an evolution such as this.

Thanks again!

Matt

Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at o-r-c-a.com.
* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
www.example.com
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

OK, that's the type of information that is helpful.

Can you tell me what time it occured. I've got a trouble ticket in with the web hosting company about this type of situation and I haven't heard back yet.

Moray (John W) was updating my wesite today and said Firefox has had some updates that had been causing some problems. I'm not exactly sure what it was, but I emailed him about. Hopfully he may know.

Keep up the good work Paul and Jim.

LMAO, thats why I never take updates until I think I need them.... All these programs want to update all the time, if theres a problem I update...

but if you update and everything's working, sometimes things stop working

Truthfully, I think there are two problems going on.

One is that some people's computers are not refreshing their DNS cache or otherwise failing to locate the ORCA server and the other is that the webhost appears to be having some sporadic, self-correcting problems as well.

I filed a trouble ticket and they are currently running audits on the server to try to determine which hosts are having problems.

Please do me a troubleshooting favor. If you get the can't find server error please try using the following link directly to the IP address for the club website: http://74.54.160.158/

Then, make a post as to whether you were successful with the IP address but not the domain name.

Thanks for letting us know the status Joe. I didn't know you were running Vista. The good news is the you flush the DNS cache in Vista the same as XP.

Here's a little blurb for those following along:
http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1600/vista_dns_cache_flush

You've got an interesting problem since one of your computers works fine and the other returns these errors. The DNS cache is not likely your problem.

Invalid session errors on phpBBS forums are due to the way phpBBS tries to keep people from hijacking your session. Using cookies and a session table it tries to match your IP address with the cookie info and session table. Some people have had this problem due to the way some ISP's route their traffic causing situations where one moment you're coming into the forum with one IP and the next with a different one. phpBBS then thinks that someone is hacking your session.

When you've tried to access the club forum from the two different computers (one that works and one that doesn't) are they from the same location and sharing the same internet access or different locations using different ISP's?
