Orchid Dottyback VS Black Cap Basslet

HereWeGoAgain...
I cant decide between an Orchid Dottyback, or a Black Cap Basslett. Anyone have experience with these fish? I have a 65g with a coral beauty, and a percula clown.

Thanks!

either one should do well in your tank. they cab get aggressive though. genetically they are are midget groupers and they act as such. go with the one you like the most

I've never had an orchid dottyback but from the research I've done, they will attack shrimp so, if you have any be careful or they could be an expensive snack for the dottyback. I've also heard that they get a bit aggressive. Again this is not first hand knowledge.

I do have a blackcap basslet and my experience has been that it is a very hardy and peaceful but shy fish. It will stand its ground but, generally gets along peacefully with a pair of percula clowns. A very beautiful fish, IMO.

I have heard from others that the Dottybacks tend to be shy..A friend of mine has two that hang out a lot in the rock

I am a personal fan of the orchid dottybacks (currently I have 8 in my 220) and they are awesome. I have had a black cap once and I liked it but it did tend to hide quite a bit. When I had a single orchid in my 135, it only hide when getting picked on by a sixline wrasse.

IME the Orchids could care less about other tank mates (fish or invert wise). Mine have always been the wimps of the tank. They may investigate when something new is put in, but mine have never eaten or harassed any inverts or fish.

HTH,

Keith
