just purchased8 a ornate brittle starfish from lfs my wife had to have 18 dollars reef safe ya or na ???????????????? she had to have i am putting in refuge 4 now . personally i cant believe i bought one.

what's so ornate about it?

Most people say "brittle" stars get very large and can become predatory, but doesn't mean for sure that they will eat your fish. So it's a gamble. I doubt you'll find many people with reef tanks who keep them, though.

Serpent Stars are better additions to reef tanks.

i am a little disapionted that he said there nice i a reef and charged me 18 bucks for him . thanks 4 the input , he is in the refuge.

ahhh heh... there's a thread about that going on now, whether or not to take advice from the LFS...

moral of your story is, research for yourself before you put something in your tank. You didn't have to make the purchase. you could always ask if they'll take it back... doesn't mean they have to though.

why would the store stock it at all if it didn't want to sell it?

I know a few people with Brittle stars. They are excellent scavangers. I don't think you would have a problem with him in your DT.

i have one in my tank that is over a foot across. i feed him a half a silver side about once a week and he leaves all my fish alone. target feed him and he should be ok.

mine is awesome for eating left overs

I never had any problems with mine as well. I used to feed him silversides and he never went near my fish.

not sure of the difference between brittle stars and serpant stars.

I had what i think is a green brittle star (he didn't have smooth legs, they had bristles/hairs/feelers) that approached 20" and started to eat most new additions I would add to the tank.

he ate two clowns, two firefish, flame hawk - all new additons that didn't make it overnight - before I figured out what was happening

\fed the tank well

From what I've heard over the past number of years and in my personal experience...green brittle stars are predatory but the others are not.
