just hooked up my Aqua contoller III
ORP reading is miles away from my Milwaukee brand controller

probe and controller is used
thinking the probe may need to be conditioned or replaced
suggestions?
whats the difference between standard grade and lab grade
thanks!
frank

I would buy some inexpensive calibration fluid to check it if you want accurate measurement. Probes also need to be cleaned periodically, and may need recalibration after cleaning.

Here's one such fluid from American Marine/Pinpoint:

whats the difference between standard grade and lab grade

ORP and pH electrodes come in many different styles and qualities and price ranges, but that statement alone means nothing.

I have a Pinpoint brand ORP and it needs constant attention. I usually take a small toothbrush and give it a good scrub a couple times a week. Over a week's period, it usually goes up by about 100 on my Ozonizer, after I clean it off it goes back to where I think it should be....makes me wonder if I should devise some sort of ultrasonic cleaner that comes on ever so often to help keep it accurate.

Randy thanks for your input!
I have a conditioning kit for my milwaukee controller along with correction fluid (what Milwaukee calls it)

My Milwaukee controller says my ORP is 425MV
I went through the whole procedure and tested it with the correction fluid and I'm off by 2 MV

I ran the Neptune through the same procedure and it's no where near correct
right now the Neptune says it's 254 MV when I use the correction fluid which is supposed to be 250MV it climbs to 490-500MV
when I rinse probe and put it back in the sump it goes back down to 254 MV

I ordered an standard grade probe and I'll try it
anyone know how to calibrate the Neptune controller?

instructions are kind of vague refers to a Qiunn+ 4.0 and a Qiunn+7.0 solution

Over a week's period, it usually goes up by about 100 on my Ozonizer,

Is it in the dark? Algae growing on it can rapidly impact measurement.

Randy thanks for your input!

You're welcome. I've not used the Neptune so i cannot comment on it and how to calibrate it.

I recently up graded from a 180 gal mixed reef to a 450 gal mixed reef
I swapped everything over and matched the water parameters as close as possible
tank was full of new saltwater and was able to fill my sump with 150 gals of water from old tank

after a couple of days Milwaukee stabilized at 415-425MV and as low as 395MV

I bought from the same guy i bought the tank an Neptune aqua controller III
when I originally set up the controller (with used probe, it was dry when I took the cap off) my orp was 495MV and over a 24 hour period settled at 254MV

I tried to check the probe with the Milwaukee correction fluid and it does change so I suspect the probe is bad

probes are clean in dimly lite area of sump placed about a 12" apart suspended

FWIW, many fine reef tanks have the ORP in the 200's, and that by itself is not a problem, IMO. When I do not use ozone, mine would run in the 200's. With it it usually runs in the 300's.

would like to hook up the AQIII to my computer so I can monitor it while I'm away
I'd like to make sure that it's working correctly not so hung up on the number value
the difference in the 2 has me baffled
thanks for the input

i dont understand why an ORP probe would be critical enough to want a lab grade unit or to rig an ultrasound device to clean it.

mine is basically an inverse PH probe, as far as i can tell from years of data points.

If you are using ozone, it may be very important to be sure you are accurately measuring it and not overdosing the tank (if not, it may be a relatively unimportant measurement,a and I don't recommend that most people bother).

That said, a more expensive probe does not ensure accurate measurement,a and many of the common things that go wrong in reef tank ORP measurement (like things growing on the probe) will happen regardless of other properties of the probe.

mine is basically an inverse PH probe,

That is certainly a big part of the ORP response. :)

ORP settled at 254MV with old probe for a week or so I got the new probe installed it and the 2 meters were within 20-30MV of each other
that was 3 days ago now the reading on the AQUAIII is back down to 254MV
my Milwaukee is at 445MV at night and 425MV during the day

I tested the Milwaukee with their correction fluid (250mv) and it's real close I mean almost dead on at 248mv.

is there someway to reset the AQAIII to factory settings
I attempted to calibrate the old probe

sent an email to Neptune but haven't heard back

Thanks!
