Orp?

What should my ORP reading be? My ORP is currently 220. I think that's pretty low.

How do I increase it or decrease it when I need to?

Where should my probe be?

Well I can think of one place for the probe :) but in all seriousness put probe in sump. 220 is super low, do some water changes and see. 350 and up is good, the higher the better. Have you had anything die that you are not aware of? When was the last time you did a water change?

I guess I should let you know that I just starting using my ORP probe this morning. ORP is now up to 251.

 probably should have mentioned that in the first post..

let it settle in... Randy has said that an 300 ORP is fine ( 400 is ideal for sps tanks imo).. to raise it most people use ozone...

Where can I get ozone and can you recommend any specific brand? (Sorry . . . new at this)

I already have an ORP probe on my RKE. How do I go about getting the ozonizer and air dryer?

marine depot sells them

At the end of the day many peeps have amazing tanks without Ozone. I personally stay away from it as it can be dangerous sometimes deadly to your tank and yourself if overdosed. Keep things simple: live rock, deep sand bed, fuge. Nuff said.

also ORP is highest late in the day and lowest at dawn.

ORP probes only stay accurate for a few days. they drift higher as they get dirty and need to be regularly cleaned.

you can think your numbers are great and then clean your probe and they drop 100 points.

there are a couple of good articles by Randy Holmes-Farley here on RC.

think of it as a way to measure trends in your tank although higher is usually better up to 400 or so.

ozone is a non discriminate oxidizer and can raise your ORP level sky high and kill every thing in your tank.

ORP levels over 500 or so are lethal.

sometimes koi keepers will treat a pond for parasites by raising the orp levels with potassium permanganate to 475-500 for a few hours. it is a fine line to kill the parasites and not the fish as their gills are being oxidized all the time during the treatment.

i'm with Brett to keep it simple.

Brett you didn't say skimmer.
