HAHA! it shoudl suck the air in by itself. take it out and look down it. if you cannot see an angle on teh inlet for the air tube on the inside of the discharge, try to rotate gently.

def a non needlewheel unit. that woudl make it perform alot better and surely quiet it down. check whetehr that nipple on the inside is angled. try to rotate it if you can. if it is one piece, you wil have to use the air pump.

I have this unit, only i'm using the overflow and bubble trap add ons. Pickupman they now offer rio or maxi jet 600 pumps. The pump is basically the determining factor on skim for this unit. While i'm still using the 600 i plan on getting a maxi 1200 soon. I've also heard adding a airstone under the collection side really steps up performance. Search cpr bak pak mods an you'll find some interesting ways to modify this unit.
