Yup. Tree stand broke loose from the tree. SO, anyone reading this please make sure to check your equipment before climbing in. My stand had been in that same tree for 7 years and was well maintained every year, but that one. Remember to back your steps out a turn and a fresh reset on the stand wouldn't hurt. I know those will be items I will practice if I ever get the nerve to climb a tree again.
Also be careful when unhooking your safety belt. My accident happened right after I unclipped from the tree for the climb down. Oh, and make sure to take your cell phone along. That day was the first time I had left mine behind that year and nothing sucks worse than laying in the woods alone.
Wow, how long did you lay there? My wife is going this year for the first time. We are actually making several ground blinds so I dont have to worry about her climbing in and out of trees. Lots of bow hunters die or are paralized every year in accidents like that. I am glad you came out all right.
I actually had traumatic paralysis for about an hour. It then took me about an hour to get myself out of the woods using my bow as a cane. I was pretty jacked up for only falling less than 15 feet. I was lucky I was on a steep incline so when I fell I took the blow to the front of my spine and did not injure the cord at all. Actually don't have much problem with it now either except for some instability in that area of my spine do to soft tissue damage.
Taking the wife out is a great idea and a great time. I actually have taken my wife out in the fall with me a couple times and we have gone shotgun hunting together twice. Both times she got a buck. She loves the outdoors and there is nothing better than spending time in the woods watching the animals. SHe had a squirrel climb in the tree with her one night that scared her to death at first, but she was so pumped about the experiance later as there is no other way to get that close to nature.
I'm not the bowhunter. My brother is. He usually hunts on my parents half acre property outside of Adel. I'm really looking forward to eating a couple steaks out of some of those prime cuts.
I think he may try to hunt with a recurve bow this year for the first time. Not that it isn't challenging enough with your standard compound bow.
I have an uncle that pheasant hunts with a bow. I personally believe that there is a correct tool for every job and Benelli makes the proper tool for pheasant....
I've bowhunted for the past 18 years. I have a couple different bows, one of my favorites is a Martin Lynx Magnum that I use a set of Martin Warthog recurve limbs on. Looks odd shooting arecurve with a 4 inch overdraw. Its a real short bow and is great for still hunting. I have killed as many deer with it as I have with any other bow or gun I own.
I love to hunt. I am currently going to school in Iowa City and went back home (wyoming) to hunt mule deer with my Dad.
While going down the last draw below the bluffs we spooked out three bucks. One was a spike, one a 4 pointer, and the last was a 5 by 6. I chose to shoot the 5 by 6.
