Brian, that's why I got the electronic kit. I use to have a nice acoustic kit. It took up too much space and was too loud. You can play through a amp or headphones for quiet play. I've got a Phonic PA system with 2 15" speakers. The mixer finally came in last week and this thing rocks cranked up. Sounds perfect. Really, If I was ever to be in a band, I'd just assume play a electronic kit, since it sounds so real. And you can change drum kits with a push of a button.
You get a little thump noise from the pads, but it's not loud like a acoustic set. But mesh heads would help alot. Plus it's cool to go from modern sounding kits to like 60s 70s style. Then the percussion sounds like congas, timbales, cowbells, etc are fun to mess around with too.
The kit I got is a Roland TD-3. It's $999 new. But it doesn't come with a kick pedal so thats another $50-$100 or more. Depends what you want. I also bought some extra bars and clamps to beef up the rack. Alesis has a new kit out for only $699 I believe. I might order it just to get the trigger pads...they are all mesh heads. My kit has a mesh snare and it feels more real than the rubber pads. Plus I wanna try out the DM-5 module to see what all sounds it has. I'm hopin' guitar center has a set in stock I can try out....before I actually buy it.
