OT: Anyone do tile work?

I'm thinking of surprising my roommate by redoing her vanity area in her bedroom the weekend of May 5th when she goes out of town.

The countertop is laminate, and I'd like it tiled over ( the tile she likes comes in 1ft sheets of smaller connected tiles )... some sites I've looked at said the countertop should be removed and plywood put down... but I don't know much on the topic..

Anyone have any experience in doing this stuff..and interested in some side work? I'd basically need the tile put down and the sink hooked back up and working afterwards (assuming it needs to come out for the tile) I have no idea how much something like this would run...the counter is only 54 inches long... PM me if you might be interested... thanks.

I was think of doing the same thing in my bathroom . I will let you know how it goes . I think I am going to put down some cement board first and then put the time down the tile . I have done some tile work , but am no pro at it. I can't see it being more than a 100 bucks , depending on the tile of course.
