OT - Anyone else do vintage car racing or have a porsche-914?

My brother does vintage car racing (RMVR) with his Triumph TR-4.

I had so much fun watching him, I couldnt resist so I just bought a 1971 Porsche 914-4 RUNNING with original fuel injection for $1000 ( and about another $1000 in spare parts ;-)

So anyone else out there do local vintage racing or know a good (OLD)-Porsche mechanic?

I am pretty good myself - I had a 914 in College & did major engine rebuilds & upgrades, I just know nothing about the stock fuel injection.

I used to race 914s and upgraded last season to an SC. There are still many active 914s in local Porsche Club events.

BTW the PCA Club Race is this weekend...there will be lots of local participation but drivers will be towing in from across the country. Lots of Porsches from 356/912/914 all the way up to new GT-3s and highly modified beasts.

High Plains Raceway is Colorado's brand new (and great!!!) local road racing track...2.5 miles with 15 turns and lots of elevation changes. If you're interested, the track is 17 miles NE of Byers on US-36. About an hour east of Denver. Open lapping day today and racing Saturday and Sunday. Free admission. (I'm going to be there doing corner worker duty on Saturday.) The weather even looks to be cooperating!

Thought that was you. Did you get rid of the 914?
 
Yeah, I sold it last year...so I briefly held the honor of simultaneously owning 3 Porsches...makes reefing seem pretty affordable. The guy who bought it did a wonderful job of a full body restoration over the winter. Now it even looks as nice as it drives! He's been bringing it to PCA high speed driver education events and it really makes me miss it.

We have one guy from Albuquerque and his dad who are both active...between them they own over 30 914s in various states of track cars, restoration projects, parts salvage and daily drivers.

What did you end up getting for it?


So I got the new (old) car home last night.
I definitely needs some work BUT $1000 for:

A running 914 with the original fuel injection
perfect glass
a complete extra set of engine shroud sheet-metal
A spare pair of stainless steel heat exchangers & monza exhaust
A complete extra set of all heating pipes
Extra engine computer with entire wireharness
2 extra distributors
An extra COMPLETE brake system ( EVERY tube & piece possible including MC & 4 calipers )
2 extra shift linkages
extra front & rear hood
spare gas tank
extra door with all innards
extra instrument cluster & center console
extra front & rear bumper
extra injectors
original Porsche luggage rack with all parts in mint cond.

AND .... a mint cond original Jack ;-)

I cant complain.

Time to clean out the garage & start a new project.

Wish I could join in the club....but I thought I would chime in.

My buddy has a 914, but he replaced the motor with a 911 turbo engine. OMG, that thing is so fast. But it takes forever for the engine to warm up.

I was just sitting here thinking of how nice it would be to be able to walk all the way around a car I am working on in the garage. I must need smaller toys....
 
Many people (too many) do the V8 conversions...it really destroys the value of the car, though. The conversion to a Porsche 6-cyl, though is very nice if done well. WetWolger's buddy seems to have done a very nice job.
 
6 cyl turbo....and not just that, I personally feel the 911 turbo engine is a very amazing machine. It is so smooth and awesome sounding

It really does not get any hotter than that....lowering the value or not, the thing is fast, and is really nicely done IMO

Are you on one of the 914 forums? I think I remember seeing the name.


Anyway, the 914 I bought is not suitable for racing.
The Longs are shot & repairs would cost more than buying another "roller" to get me going.

Anyone know of someone who has a 914 hiding in their "barn" waiting for a new owner???

There's an independent shop called Poudre Sports Car between Loveland and Fort Collins that I know work on porches. (They have a website).

Worth a look, I delt with them back a few years ago when I was working for Volvo. Seeing that they're still in business they must be doing something right.

thats funny. have you been a customer there? Those guys are the most condescending *%$!holes i have ever encountered. I dare you to tell them anything that YOUR car may/may not need. report back.
 
Stu, I don't even remember exactly what the final sales price was...it was a fully race-prepped car with new engine rebuild and two extra sets of wheels, including the 7" Revolutions that are impossible to find anymore.

I think we finally agreed on on $6500 or $7000.

The weld-in longitudinal reinforcement kits do a wonderful job of taking care of the rust problems and stiffening the frame. I had the guy who did my cage do those as well. (Not legal for SCCA, but okay for PCA...not sure about RMVR.)
