OT - box turtle

yea, shows them originating from NY, VA and PA. I know there have been several sightings here, maybe they are migrating toward this way now, they live in marshland though, so I don't know. I believe we are destroying their natural habitat and this is the reason for the decline in them.

sorry if i came across too strong in my 1st post..just irritates me so much now that years ago i was told its illegal to even pick up a mantis, keep a turtle as a pet (any turtle)..now since i have the internet & can see what is the actual laws & endagered species..it makes me mad...alot of species i thought were near extinct were actually not...alot i thought were common are actually rare..& it changes every few years...one year a species is near extinct...the next..not Threatened....

I have been told by more than one DNR officer and a few Rangers that if it lives in this state you may not collect it and keep it as a pet. Raccoons for instance... also I ran into this when I had a number of timber and canebrake rattlesnakes that I had brought back with me from when I lived in Ohio. Again, when I was checking on getting a bobcat as a pet(Caracal Lynx are much better pets IMO BTW). I have never read all the actual laws federal and state that govern the capture and or permanant collection of local fauna for West Virginia. I just went by what I was told over and over again by DNR and a few Rangers I know.

On a different note someone stated that lettuce was good for turtles... just as long as it is one of the more nutrtional ones. Romaine is good... regular iceberg and alot of leaf types are bad as they have almost no nutritive value at all. Don't ever get an iguana hooked on iceberg...

Hate to rain on everyone's parade, but my guest is an Ohio turtle.

LOL.

I figured most of you were just teasing, but I thought I might tease back.

He'll be free by sundown.

LOL,
For future reference Legendland has succeeded in turtle care and propagation for several years now and Taz has many years of working knowledge of both reptiles and amphibians.

Oh BTW, animals are placed on endangered species lists and removed yearly at times, I believe they are removed from those lists because of individuals who take time to help those in dire need. Take that last line as a warning and a lesson for your fellow man as well as turtlekind.

Good to hear the relocation project was a success.
I'm out.

warning ? (& ive only raised certain species of turtles ;) i dont anymore because of job & life)

iv heard, from a conservationist (not a great credential.. ) that the pretty much the only turtles not endangered are snapping turtles..

they said that our turtles get jacked and shipped overseas for soup.

yea, I have raised a few batches of eggs myself. These were just the RES, but I was hoping to get into raising some Muds or stinkpots. I wanted to raise some spotted, but they just cost too much. I now have my turtles but by the time they reach maturity, I will not actually be able to do what I planned. I think I will just enjoy them for now, they are so sweet. I have a DBT that is so beautiful, has the whitest skin with beautiful spots. I will have to take a picture soon and post on this thread :)

DBT = diamond back terrapin?

I used to really want one of those before I got into saltwater. Turtles AND fish are too much for Mrs. Kung.

Yes, diamond back terrapin. He is so beautiful and so personable, he is my favorite one, his name is Charlie, lol. I def. will take some pictures soon.

How long have you had your stinkpots?
I move our our turtles outside to a pond during the summer and back into the house late summer early fall once the temperature starts falling in the evenings. They love to bask in the sun! I love to watch them stack up like "king on the mountain"! They really color up and grow from the natural sunshine. I got a bunch of pond plants given to me last year so I put them in the pond. The lilies and all the green vegetitation was gone in 48 hours. I knew better! Turtles are really cool. Our RES is 12 yrs old! He have called her the "old lady" for ever.

aww, that is so kewl, 12 years old! My Res is only 3 years old and my stinkpots, mud, dbt and softshell are all 2 years old. We just built a pond for them and got it up and running, they have been living in a tank in the house, I will bring them in when the weather gets cool. Yes, they love it outside. I have some plants in the pond too, lol, all with bite marks. I try to keep them happy with small goldfish, but those dont last long. I need to just have my husband net some tiny fish out of the ponds around here.

We went to the Columbus Zoo today. The first thing my daughter got cranked about was the turtles on the pond at the entrance. They were pretty neat, all stacked on a log.
